Well, yesterday morning turned out to be interesting, to say the least, and we ended up with another kitten. I was traveling along I-469 (business loop around Fort Wayne for I-69). This is a 70 MPH interstate. I was heading to A.'s to drop off Shawnee before school. I had just got on and had traveled perhaps 2-3 miles when out of the corner of my eye I spied a tiny, gray fuzz ball hovering near the concrete median. Another 2-3 miles later, my brain caught up with my truck and I realize I just saw a kitten standing in the center of four lanes of semi's and speeding vehicles. I started chanting words that I shouldn't say in the presence of Shawnee and got off the next exit I came to, drove back to my first exit and once again got on the interstate. Soon, I pulled over at what looked like a squashed bit of fur. It turned out to be trash. I drove on and then I saw it, still alive and still clinging to the concrete median. I quickly pulled over, threw on the hazards and an orange safety vest (luckily I had in the truck for work) and ran for all my life across the lanes of traffic. I quietly approached it, hoping it wouldn't decide to dart into traffic.
At the sound of my voice, the little gray baby ran happily up to me, meowing impatiently. I gathered her up and then waited as vehicles and semi;'s whizzed by me at 75 MPH. At a lull, I ran back the city block to the truck and jumped in. The kitten was purring and rubbing her head against me. I was shaking from adrenaline.
How this little 6-7 week old kitten ended up in the middle of a very busy interstate, I'll never know! I just have this sinking I-hate-humanity feeling she was diliberately thrown there. She had matted eyes, but seems quite people, dog, and other animal friendly. She follows us around and wants to be constantly held.
While I was at school, I left her at my mom's. When she and my sister (who was spending the day with her) found out, she remarked, "Leave it to Gina to risk her life to save a cat." Yes, I am weird like that (but then again I was an animal control officer in another life!)

I would've risked my life also. Fucking stupid people.
I'm right there with Nio, I can't believe someone would throw any animal out on a highway. I am so glad you found it. I know you and the cat will have a special bond. It is a beautiful animal
Oh, he is quite lovely! And, Fucking Stupid People was very close to the words I started shouting when I saw him out there. Me, I wonder why anyone would chose an interstate to dump a kitten (or kittens-I didn't see any others, but who knows...) unless they really wanted it to be squashed (and die a horrendous death.) Bastards!
i would have been running out into traffic right along with you.
